What is Milk Kefir?

Milk Kefir is fermented milk, and it naturally contains probiotics. It has been consumed for thousands of years across countless cultures as a beverage that promotes health. A little tart and a mildly fizzy yogurt like beverage, which has more probiotic content than greek yogurt.   

What are the ingredients in milk kefir? 

Milk kefir is made using 2 ingredients: organic cow milk / home made coconut milk and kefir grains. The kefir grains are the culture that ends up turning milk into kefir, and it’s similar to what is used for fermenting real yogurt and sourdough. Any kinds of fruits can be added to milk kefir to make the perfect smoothie  Of course, like with anything else, the quality of ingredients you use will highly impact the end flavor and quality.

What are the benefits of  PRO-B milk kefir?

Milk Kefir is a food, not a drug or a supplement. So it’s best to look at it like you look at a bag of cherry tomatoes - delicious, natural, and makes you feel good. Of course, milk kefir, like all fermented foods, naturally contain probiotics and healthy bacteria –and the science is strong around their benefit to our digestion and our bodies. In the end, try it and see how it makes YOU feel. That’s your best indication for what its benefit will be, beyond great taste!

What is the shelf life of milk kefir?

Milk Kefir being a fermented drink is naturally preserved and easily lasts two to three months if properly refrigerated. We specify a best before period of ten days on our bottle. This does not indicate its expiry but a sweet period after which the live culture in our beverage will make it tart over time. While some people prefer their milk kefir that way, most people have not acquired that tangy flavour. The only time we recommend not consuming the milk kefir is when it has been left unrefrigerated for more than a day or left opened.

Why is my milk kefir fizzy, has it gone bad?

Due to fermentation bubbles are produced. Just make sure that you open the bottle with caution. The product is totally safe to consume if it bubbly.

Does Milk Kefir have lactose?

Milk Kefir is 99% lactose free. The culture eats up all the the lactose and gives us the healthy beverage. It is therefore suitable for people with lactose intolerance. We do suggest starting with smaller doses and in extreme cases consulting your physician before having any of our pro-biotic beverages. You can also  opt for our dairy free option made with home made coconut milk.

How often should I drink milk kefir?

Milk kefir is a food, not a drug or a supplement. So it’s best to look at milk kefir like you look at a bag of carrots–delicious, natural, and makes you feel good. When you look at it like that, you’ll realize there is no “right” amount or “wrong” amount to drink. Drink as much as makes you feel good! Some like a ½ bottle, some like a full bottle. There is no rule here, as it’s a natural food. Our recommended starter dose is one third of a cup diluted with two thirds of water.

Why is milk kefir tart?

Milk kefir like most fermented foods is slightly tart. It is mildly fizzy so don't you worry about that either. The tartness and fizziness tend to gradually increase over time in storage as well . It does not indicate that milk kefir has gone bad. Feel free to add fruits or water to adjust it to your taste buds. 

How can I reuse of recycle the bottles?

We do our best to consider sustainability at every stage of our production process, and we appreciate customers like you who also want to do their part. Unfortunately, we cannot accept empty bottles at this time, but we do have a few suggestions for repurposing them. PRO-B bottles make great tiny gardens, water bottles, and storage for chutneys, dried herbs, spices, etc. Have other repurposing ideas? We'd love to hear them.

Why is my milk kefir separating?

You may notice separation of whey (also known as liquid gold due to its healing properties) in the kefir, which is normal and we recommend to shake the bottle and consume the kefir with the whey. In case this is happening with coconut milk kefir just shake it as well.

Why is my milk kefir so curdy?

If anything that just indicates a healthy culture.  The consistency of the kefir may become thick like curd, which is normal. It is recommended to dilute a little water to make the consumption easier, or you can make your favourite smoothie out of it! 

Is the cow milk hormone free?

We source our milk from trusted and verified sources which work with small quantity organic produce and ensures no hormones are injected at any stage.
